I have so many incredible memories of these two islands that we visited with Med Sailors that I wrote down some of my favorite spots there including beaches, shops, restaurants and hotels for those docking there.
I hope you one day visit these little Greek gems which are a little off the beaten path making them all the more alluring for both, the jet-set crowd seeking quieter spots to dock their superyachts but also for the more adventurous traveller seeking something a little different. I would recommend taking a sailing trip like the ones offered on Med Sailors which really maximize your tour of Greece by stopping at the most idyllic islands and some less populated swiming spots in between!
Spetses: Expect to see super yachts, luxury shops and big houses with private docks dotting the beautiful coastline as this is a popular stop for wealthy Athenians. Naturally I loved this island for that very reason and didn’t hesitate to stop in the shop Soho Soho and pick up some Soludos espadrilles. We started off with lunch in a seafood tavern called Bouboulina for some truly delicious grilled octopus. Then wandered the small town shops (if you want greek sandals, this is the place!) then rented a scooter and stopped at the most idylic beach Xilokeriza: quiet types, beautiful scenery with a handful of yachts passing by. We chose it because we went to another beach that looked like it had a ton of water sports and we just wanted a quiet, uncrowded spot. We loved driving past the incredible houses here, its no wonder Onassis docked here when wooing Jackie O. Stop for a drink at the hotel Poseidon Grand Hotel and order anything with basil in it as the island is full of fresh basil plants! Also docked there… KATE MOSS on a super yacht.
Hydra: There’s so much to say for Hydra, but I’ll let the pictures do the talking. We loved it so much we ended up staying a few nights in the Cotommatae hotel and exploring all the little streets. There’s no cars here, just people, donkeys and a whole lot of cats! Again we spotted Kate Mosses’ boat, this time with pumping music (I think she’s following me… Kate, give it a rest already!) An unforgettable moment was stumbling on to the mega chic indian wedding that was set up on the sunset restaurant Hydronetta which later and an incredible fireworks display! If ever there was a perfect, intimite wedding, this was it.
Eat: Omilos - restaurant on the cliff, truly unforgettable views, Techne – best food on the island hands down! Elevated greek dishes served with great attention to detail, Hydronetta Sunset bar – great for a drink with a beautiful view of the sunset, The Cool Mule’s Gelato was a recommendation from a reader and it really was life changing ice cream! Try the Baklava flavor.
Sleep: Cotommatae hotel was really romantic and a great spot to relax a little after all of the island hopping. Beautiful rooms which were restored from the 1800′s full of antiques and maritime memorabilia decorating the rooms but also boasting of modern bathrooms and ammenities.
Do: Go for a run! The views here are truly spectacular in the morning and not to be missed for those early risers! There’s also plenty of boats to take you to secluded beaches which I highly recommend.
*Special thanks to Med Sailors for this wonderful opportunity to sail the islands with them!
